“It is with great sadness that we believe we have found Dorothy “Dot” Barber. The vehicle she was driving was located in Ashe County and her body not too far away. Sheriff James Williams and his detectives are working this death investigation, but in conversation with Sheriff James Williams this morning, there is no evidence of foul play.

The Avery Sheriff’s office has been in contact last night and throughout the day with Ashe County detectives to make this as easy for family and friends and provide closure in as quick a manner as possible.

Avery County Sheriff, Kevin Frye wants to thank all the agencies and news media for assisting in getting information out and their search efforts for Mrs. Barber.”

11:28am – On Wednesday, December 10, Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman provided more information on the search for Dorothy Barber from Linville.

Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye requested assistance on Tuesday at approximately 11:15am, from Watauga County Units to meet with an air unit (helicopter) of the NC Highway Patrol at the Wilkes and Watauga County line.

The coordinated fly over included an air observer and pilot while directing Watauga County Sheriff's officer units on the ground from the Watauga County line and Wilkes up US-421 to the Blue Ridge Parkway then following the Parkway toward the Avery County line (beginning in Deep Gap to the Parkway Bridge and US-321 in Blowing Rock) where Avery County Sheriff Office units picked up the flight of the helicopter to the Avery County line and beyond.

The search proved no results of the missing vehicle and its occupant.

Sheriff Hagaman added that since Friday, December 6, units from the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office along with the NPS Parkway Rangers and the Blowing Rock Police, have, and continue to, patrol along the roads and the Parkway from the Avery County line to Deep Gap and along US-421 North and South to the Wilkes County line. In fact, more WCSO units have been patrolling these areas this morning.

Sheriff Hagaman reminds everyone that this is a vast area, and they are asking that the public please be vigilant in assisting with anything they may have to offer by way of reporting anything that they may suspect, or see along these routes.

The vehicle being sought is a 1998 Toyota Camry Four-Door, with a NC Tag of AAF-3455.

Sheriff Hagaman adds that he would encourage the general public to go to the NC Department of Public Safety’s website for SILVER ALERTS for updated information: https://www.nccrimecontrol.org/Index2.cfm?a=000003,000014,000081,001682
