Wednesday Night Rain Brings Flooding, Many Spots Receiving 3+ Inches

A forecast storm that brought rain Wednesday night left many of the usual flood prone locations under water into the overnight. Boone Police reported that the Boone Mall parking lot, Bamboo at the airport and near the Moose Lodge were flooded for a time. The rains also caused a mudslide on Elk Creek Road. The Watauga River gauged showed the river reaching moderate flood stage of 10.17 feet at 2am. Several accidents in the county starting occurring as the rains picked up intensity. Motorist were impacted for a considerable amount of time by two accidents on highway 105 at the Shull's Mill entrances. It is not known if weather played a factor in the initial three vehicle accident, followed by a single vehicle accident just a few yards from the first wreck.
