Heavy rains and high winds caused a number of power outages and some road closings on Tuesday after storms rolled through the area. Officially four inches of rain was recorded in Boone, two inches shy of the 6.43 inches recorded on Mount Mitchell. Beech Mountain also recorded four inches, while Jefferson saw 3.84. At Grandfather Mountain, staff recorded 4.22 inches of rain accumulation at the base of the mountain Wednesday morning.
Several roads in the area were impacted by either high water or falling trees. Wonderland Trail, Laurel Lane, Winterberry Trail, Silverleaf Road and Broadstone Road were impacted by trees falling across the road or into power lines. Parts of Roby Greene Road and the bridge on Dewitt Barnett Road were impacted due to high water.
A peak wind gust of 54 mph in Boone at 8:55pm was recorded at the Watauga Medical Center reporting station, while a peak gust of 75 mph was recorded on Grandfather Mountain.
The high winds lead to a number of power outages mainly in Watauga and Ashe County. Blue Ridge Electric reports that a high of 4,079 members were affected. Power was fully restored on Wednesday morning.
The Watauga River hit flood stage at 9:30pm.
