There's a lot of buzz on facebook and twitter that President Obama's visit to Wilkes County will cause a snarl for High Country traffic on Monday.
Of note is a post on Watauga High's website “Watauga County Schools will release students early on Monday, October 17, 2011. The prekindergarten-eighth grade schools will dismiss at 12:00 noon and Watauga High School will dismiss at 1:00. Lunches will be served and buses will run regular routes. Everyone will need to be gone from the Watuaga High campus by 1:30 Monday afternoon. This includes all students and staff.”.
Nothing has been confirmed publicly, by any local officials, that the above would have anything to do with a possible Presidential motorcade or not. The bold print of the last part of the WHS announcement leads one to wonder even more.
Due to protection it is understandable why a possible route would not be openly published. The itinerary released late Thursday says that the president will visit Asheville on Monday, where he will speak at the Asheville Regional Airport at 10:50 a.m, then travel to Millers Creek, where he will speak at West Wilkes High School at 4:50 p.m.
Best advice at this time is be ready for possible delays on any and all major routes in Watauga County on Monday afternoon.
