Bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills in the -20 to -25 range have already combined to set at least one new temperature record.
As Boone dropped below zero Friday morning it became the third coldest January 24 on record, passing the previous mark set in 2003. At the Watauga Medical Center reporting station Boone reached zero at 2:35am, -0 at 2:55am, -1 at 4:15am and -2 at 5:55am today. -3 was recorded at the Boone 1Se station making it the official mark.
