Area Road Projects Update – June 9

With so much work continuing in the High Country here is a brief recap of the major projects occuring.

–Progress continues with paving operations on 421/King Street. An official with Blythe Construction tells WataugaRoads.com that paving operations should be done by Friday June 15, that is barring any weather delays. Road striping will take place about two weeks after paving is complete, the entire project is expected to be complete by mid July. More information from a May 16, 2012 article here.

–On Blowing Rock Road/321 concrete was seen being poured this week as bridge work continues. Awaiting an update from DOT about the progress, which started on April 30 and was slated for 60 days. –Work continues along highway 321 in Blowing Rock as two test blasting operations took place last week (June 4-8) as part of the highway 321 road project in Blowing Rock. Starting the week of June 11 regularly scheduled blasting operations will begin from New River Falls Road heading south toward Skyland Drive. Motorist can expect minimal delays as these operations take place over the summer.
Cone Orchard Road intersection to 321, just south of Blackberry Ridge, has been realigned to allow easier and safer access by construction equipment. Continued slope/grading and clearing operations are continuing along various points along the entire project. Updated article at this link.

–Starting Monday June 11, a section of highway 194 between Banner Elk & Matney will close for 4 months to building a retaining wall. More information at this link.

–A portion of Bethel Road is closed due to bridge work, it is scheduled to be completed by August 10. More information here.

–There's also various paving operations taking place in Watauga and Avery County. This link will show you the list of projects that were announced in January. Some of these may have already been completed as of the writing of this article.
